Pepperdine Pitching Too Much For Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The University of California baseball team lost to Pepperdine, 3-0, Saturday at Evans Diamond. The Bears go to 3-4 overall, while the Waves improve to 2-4 on the season.

Cal outhit Pepperdine 10-8, but could not take advantage of scoring opportunities as the Bears lost the second day in a row to the Waves. Friday, Pepperdine defeated Cal, 5-1. The Waves received solid pitching from starter Andy Shibilo (1-1), who went 5 1/3 innings with five hits, two walks and five strikeouts. John Workman earned his first save of the season, throwing 3 2/3 innings and allowing five hits, no walks and one strikeout. Randy Wolf, who earned the win for Pepperdine on Friday, was the Waves top hitter, going 3-for-4.

Pepperdine also had a solo home run from David Matranga in teh first inning and Tyler Ferrer had a solo home run in the ninth.

A down note for Cal was an injury to starter Ryan Drese (0-1), a first team preseason All-American in Baseball America. Drese (one inning, three hits, two runs, one walk) was throwing in the second inning when he hurt his arm on his 30th pitch of the game. The extent of Drese's injury is unknown, but it is believed to be a strained ligament in his right elbow, the same injury that he suffered Feb. 23, 1996 vs. Fresno State. It knocked him out of the rest of the '96 season. Prior to Saturday's game, Drese had thrown three innings in 1997.

Despite the 3-0 loss, the Bears still had an outstanding pitching performance from Jim Vorhis, who replaced Drese in the second inning. Vorhis pitched seven innings, giving up four hits, no runs, no walks and struck out four.

Top hitters for Cal included John Furstenthal (3-for-4), Preston Sharp (2-for-2) and Barry Schell (2-for-4).

The Bears next contest will be the final game of this three-game series vs. Pepperdine, Sunday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
