California Doubles up San Francisco State

The University of California baseball team defeated visiting San Francisco State, 4-2, Wednesday at Evans Diamond in Berkeley, Calif. The Bears improve to 7-7 overall, while the Gators fall to 3-4-1 on the season.

Cal was led by the pitching of junior starter Doug Nickle (1-0), who threw career-high 6.0 innings with only two hits, no runs, only one walk and had a career-high strikeouts. Nickle did not yield a hit until the fourth inning. Freshman Jon Cuccias come in in the eighth inning, throwing 2.0 innings with two hits, one run, no walks and two strikeouts to earn his first collegiate save.

Top hitters for Cal included senior designator Jim Schmidt, who was 2-for-4 with a double, and freshman first baseman Barry Schell, who was 2-for-3.

The losing pitcher for San Francisco State was Jeff Nereson (1-1), who threw 3.0 innings with two hits, one run, one walk and had three strikeouts. Five different players had single hits for the Gators.

The Bears next contest will be the first game of a three-game series versus Oregon State, beginning Friday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
