Cal Defeats Sacramento State, 7-3

BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of California baseball team defeated non-league opponent Sacramento State 7-3 Tuesday at Evans Diamond. Cal improves to 17-27 overall, while Sacramento State falls to 13-28.

Led by the hitting of sophomore shortstop Brian Oliver, the Bears defeated Sacramento State and have now won four of their last five games after suffering through a nine-game losing streak from Mar. 22-Apr. 6.

Oliver finished the game 4-for-5 with two doubles and a solo home run in the fifth inning. Other top hitters for Cal included sophomore center fielder Preston Sharp (2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored) and senior third baseman Ivan Lewis (2-for-4, RBI).

The winning pitcher for the Bears was reliever Doug Nickle (3-4), who came in in the fifth inning and pitched 2.3 innings with one hit, one unearned run and had three walks. Nickle had replaced freshman starter Jason Ball (4.7 innings, four hits, one run, four walks, two strikeouts).

The losing pitcher for Sacramento State was starter Chris Reed (2-1), who went 5.0 innings with six hits, two earned runs, two walks and four strikeouts.

Sacramento State scored in the first inning when David Pruett led-off with a triple and was later knocked in with an RBI single by Joel Walker. Cal tied the game in the second inning on an RBI single by Lewis, scoring Sharp who had led-off the inning with a walk. The Bears then took the lead for good by scoring three runs in the fifth inning behind Oliver's home run, an RBI single by Sharp and throwing error by Hornet catcher Jason Quintel.

Cal ended up scoring single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings off of Sacramento State reliever Todd Zancaner. The Hornets managed to score a run in the sixth inning when Bill Hoover reached on an error and later scored on a double play ball hit by Quintel. Pete Gascon added another run for Sacramento State with a lead-off home run in the eighth inning.

Cal will next travel to No. 12 ranked Arizona State for a three-game series in Tempe, Ariz., beginning Friday, Apr. 18 at 7 p.m. at Packard Stadium.
