Cal's Amanda Augustus Wins Pac-10 Indoor Championships

Augustus avenges last year's loss to Arizona's Vicki Maes

Jan. 19, 1998

SEATTLE, Wash.-- At last year's Pac-10 Women's Indoor Tennis Championships, California's Amanda Augustus fell in the quarterfinals to Arizona's Vicki Maes. But this year, the junior from Palos Verdes was not to be denied. Despite losing the first set, Augustus rallied and won both the second and third sets to captured the Flight 1 singles title with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory over UCLA's Annica Cooper at the 1998 Pac-10 Indoors in Seattle, Monday.

Augustus, who entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed and warded off elimination throughout the three-day even, used three straight three-set match victories to secure the crown. With the championship title, Augustus improved her pre-dual match record to 8-2 and will most certainly rise from her current No. 32 ranking when the Spring No. 1 ITA/Rolex poll is released on Feb. 17.

Augustus, who teams with sophomore Amy Jensen in doubles, also earned the Bears the Flight 1 doubles title, although in less dramatic fashion, as the Arizona State tandem of Stephanie Lansdorp and Katy Propstra withdrew from the championship match, conceding the crown to the Cal pair.

Cal also captured the Flight 2 doubles title Monday as freshman Anita Kurimay combined with sophomore Esther Knox to defeat Vanessa Abel and Michelle Gough of Arizona, 8-3. The duo, which was playing in its first tournament as a doubles team, strung together three straight wins to bring home the championship.

In other singles action, Cal's Jenny Lee rebounded from her opening round loss in Flight 3 singles to win the consolation bracket with a workman-like 6-3, 6-3 victory over UCLA's Brandi Frudenberg.

The Cal women's tennis team will return to the hard courts Thursday, Jan. 29 when they head back to Seattle to open the dual match season at the University of Washington. The Bears will also face Washington State (Jan. 30) and Oregon (Feb. 1) during the three-game road trip.
