Augustus, Kurimay Lead Bears at Pac-10 Indoors

SEATTLE, Wash. - Amanda Augustus and Anita Kurimay both advanced to the semifinals of their respective singles flights at the 1998 Women's Pac-10 Indoor Championships in Seattle, Wash., on Saturday.

Augustus, a junior who currently ranks as the nation's No. 32 singles player and is the tournament's fourth seed, got past USC's Veronika Safarova 7-5, 6-4 in the opening round and then outlasted Vicky Maes of Arizona 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 to reach Sunday's semis in the flight 1 singles bracket. Augustus will face a tough challenge in 27th-ranked Zuzana Stunova of Washington in Sunday's play.

In flight 3, freshman Anita Kurimay, who had a bye in the opening round as the flight's top seed, breezed past Washington's Zeta Wagner 6-2, 6-1 to advance. Kurimay will take on Celana McCoury of Arizona State in the semifinals.

Cal's four other entrants had a tougher time in Saturday's action as Esther Knox, Stephanie Tibbits and Jenny Lee all dropped their opening round matches. Amy Jensen, seeded No. 3 in flight 2, was the only other Bear to get out of the first round, defeating Monique Allegre of Arizona 7-6 (10), 6-3 before falling to Washington's Peggy Wu 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

In doubles play, two of Cal's three teams advanced and will play in Sunday's semifinals. The top-seeded flight 1 tandem of Augustus and Jensen had little trouble with Melissa Pine and Moniek Van De Ven of Washington State, knocking off the Cougar twosome, 8-3. Kurimay and Knox also advanced in flight 2, posting a 8-6 win over Arizona State's Kerry Giardino and Faye DeVera. The only duo not to reach the semis was Cal's flight 3 squad of Francesca La'O and Jenny Lee which fell to Washington's Jennifer Svanfeldt and Erica Stoloff, 8-6.

Play will resume at the Pac-10 Indoor Championships on Sunday, Jan. 18 with the singles semifinals kicking off at 9 a.m. and the doubles following at approximately 4 p.m.
