Women's Tennis Defeats Oregon Easily

No. 7 Bears win 5-1.

Feb. 1, 1998

EUGENE, Ore. -- The seventh-ranked California women's tennis team concluded a very successful trip to the Northwest Sunday, notching its third straight road win with a 5-1 victory over Oregon in Eugene. The victory raised Cal's overall dual match record to 5-0 on the season.

In singles action, Amanda Augustus' bid to win her ninth straight singles match came up short as the junior from Palos Verdes, Calif., fell to Alina Wygonowska in the No. 1 slot 6-3, 7-6. It would prove to be the lone highlight for the Ducks, however, as Cal would sweep the remaining singles positions to secure the victory.

Junior Stephanie Tibbits, playing in the No. 2 position for only the second time this season, got the Bears back on track with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Andrea Petrovic. Francesca La'O, Anita Kurimay, Amy Jensen and Jenny Lee registered the other Cal victories in the No. 3-6 slots, respectively.

Due to Allison Sosnow's injury in her match with La'O and the fact that Cal had already clinched the match, the doubles portion of the contest was canceled.

The No. 7 Golden Bears will have the next few weeks off as Cal doesn't return to the action until Feb. 13, when the Bears host San Diego State at the Hellman Tennis Center. Match time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
