Cal: Cross Country - Guangul, as a junior in 2003, was team MVP after pacing Cal in all five races he entered, including at the Pac-10 Championships (28th, 25:56.90) and the NCAA West Regional (25th, 30:23).. won the Strawberry Canyon Challenge Run with a course record (19:57) and took sixth (24:43) at the Notre Dame Invitational...redshirted the 2002 season... trained in Ethiopia during the summer before his 2001 sophomore season and sustained an ankle injury, slowing him down during the collegiate a sophomore, competed at the Pac-10 (40th) and NCAA regional (58th) a freshman in 2000, led Cal in all six races he competed in with five top 20 finishes and four top 10 results...the front-running freshman at the NCAA West Regional (9th, 31:11)...placed 151st (32:13) at the NCAA Championships.

Track - In 2003, broke the 21-year-old school record in the 10,000m, clocking a time of 29:17.78 at the Stanford Invitational to qualify for the NCAA Championships...also led the team in the 3000m (8:15.16) and 5000m (PR: 14:24.17).

High School: In cross country at Santa Clara HS, won the Central Coast Section title (15:21) and placed third (15:32) at the Division II state meet...set the school record in the mile, 3200m and a senior in the 3200m, finished first at the CCS meet and fourth at the state meet.

Personal: Born March 24, 1981 in Ethiopia...father is Getachew Guangul...integrative biology major.
