Favorite Golden Bear Moment:
"It was overtime in a 2007 game against Irvine at Irvine. We scored once in overtime and then in the last minute, a great pass was made and we scored again to go up by two. I remember turning around in the pool to look up at the bench, and everyone was on their feet cheering and it was an amazing feeling of team accomplishment and success!"
CalBears.com: What is your dream job?
JO: My dream job would be to own a vineyard in Napa Valley. I think it would be so fun to make all different kinds of wine, live in the most beautiful area of California and do it all for a living!
CalBears.com: You earned superior status academic All-American team honors and were named to the All-MPSF academic squad. What do you enjoy most about school?
JO: What I love most about school, which I think is unique to Berkeley, is the emphasis and importance put on small-group discussions. As a political science major, I enjoy meeting in small-class environments weekly to debate and discuss the information we are learning about. I feel I have learned to appreciate many different points of views, and became friends with people I would never have met otherwise.
CalBears.com: What is the favorite arena at which you've ever played?
JO: At home, of course! I love gamedays at Cal at the Spieker Aquatics Complex because we have home-court advantage, a rowdy crowd to intimidate the opponents, and I can always count on pump-up music blaring across the pool deck. Nothing compares to walking out of your locker room onto the pool deck, ready to win!
CalBears.com: What movie do you quote the most? What lines from that movie do you use the most?
JO: I don't have a particular movie that I like to quote. But my favorite TV show is `The Office' and I might quote it from time to time. My favorite character is Dwight, he always has the best lines in the show...but I could never pull them off!
CalBears.com: As a political science major, did you follow this year's presidential election particularly carefully? Do you follow politics in the news closely?
JO: Actually I was really into this year's presidential election. I voted in the primaries and in the general election at a polling station on Telegraph. I even attended a campaign party (I won't mention for which candidate) and helped collect donations while enjoying a live DJ and great company! I try to keep up with current events by reading a couple of news articles everyday. My political science classes also help keep me up to date, since we are always discussing current events.
CalBears.com: How have your coaches helped shape your game?
JO: My coaches have helped shape my game completely. Ever since I was a freshman, I have lived in Berkeley during the summer to play for [head coach Richard Corso's] summer club team. Rich was able to help me to focus on and perfect specific skills that strengthened my game, such as posting up in set and my outside shot, which I can transfer into the collegiate season. Assistant coach Serela Kay has been especially significant in shaping my game. Her and I share the ultimate bond, we're lefties! But really, Serela has always been able to give me tips and ways to take advantage of being a lefty for our team.
CalBears.com: In the last women's water polo Q&A, Camille Hewko wanted the next student-athlete to answer: What is your favorite food? Where would you like to be eating your favorite food? (The more descriptive, the better!)
JO: I think some of my teammates might agree with me on this, but my favorite food would have to be a large, fresh salad from Intermezzo on Telegraph. I definitely eat there at least once a week! I prefer getting my salad there and eating with friends or teammates after a hard practice!
CalBears.com: In the last women's water polo Q&A, Camille Hewko wanted the next student-athlete to answer: Would you rather be a mermaid or have wings?
JO: This is a tough one! I always pretended I was a mermaid when I was younger since I grew up around pools and loved to swim! But having wings would be awesome because I could fly anywhere I wanted and travel all the time. So I guess I would rather have wings!
CalBears.com: What question would you want the next women's water polo athlete to answer?
JO: If your life were a movie, what genre would it be?
