Allen brings to Cal an outstanding rowing career both on and off the water. He began rowing while attending the University of Virginia, where he was a four-year member of the rowing program and captain of the team his senior year. After earning a degree in economics from Virginia in 2001, Allen went on to become a seven-time senior U.S. National team member and two-time Olympian. Allen's career highlights include setting a world record in the eight, en route to winning gold at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games and bronze in the eight at the 2008 Olympics and winning the prestigious Diamond Challenge Sculls at the Henley in 2005. He was named USRowing's Male Athlete of the Year in 2007 and inducted into the National Rowing Foundation's Hall of Fame in 2010.
Prior to coaching at Cal, Allen served as an intern assistant coach at the University of Washington for the 2008-2009 season, where he helped the Huskies to national championships in the varsity, junior varsity and freshmen events.
