John Montgomery begins his fifth season at California and his second as an assistant coach with the Golden Bears. Prior to his elevation to the coaching staff, Montgomery served three seasons as Cal's director of basketball operations.

Montgomery primarily works with the team's guards where he aided in the development of Pac-12 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year Jorge Gutierrez as well as all-conference honorees Allen Crabbe and Justin Cobbs. Montgomery also plays an important role in the program's recruiting and scouting of opponents along with his regular coaching responsibilities during practices and games.

Cal recorded 24 victories, finished second in the conference and earned an NCAA Tournament berth during his Montgomery's first season on the coaching staff in 2011-12

Prior to his elevation, Montgomery coordinated all recruiting activities, oversaw team travel, served as the staff liaison to visiting teams and worked with a variety of aspects of Cal's summer camps programs during his three seasons as the program's director of operations.

Before joining the California men's basketball program, Montgomery spent the 2007-08 season as an assistant coach at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., under head coach Jeff Jackson.

As a player, Montgomery was a four-year letterwinner, playing point guard at Loyola Marymount. During his senior year, he helped the Lions to the Great Alaska Shootout championship game, making a three-pointer and adding three assists in the final against Cal. For the year, Montgomery started 12 of 30 contests and averaged 5.5 ppg and 2.4 apg. He poured in a career-high 20 points, dished out eight assists and went 3-for-6 from three-point range against Pepperdine. He also helped the Lions beat a nationally-ranked Gonzaga squad on ESPN, scoring 12 points and making three free throws in the last minute to seal the victory.

A native of Menlo Park, Calif., Montgomery earned his bachelor's degree in sociology with a minor in business administration from Loyola Marymount University in 2007.
