Gregg Gottlieb

Gregg Gottlieb begins his sixth season at California and his 18th as a college basketball coach at the Division I level. He primarily works with the Golden Bears' post players, while heading the program's recruiting efforts.

Gottlieb joined the Cal staff prior to the 2007-08 season after eight years at San Diego State. He has a proven track record of coaching success, working with teams that have reached the postseason in nine of the past 11 years, including five NCAA Tournament berths at California and San Diego State. The Golden Bears have earned postseason berths all five seasons with Gottlieb on staff.

During his tenure at San Diego State, Gottlieb helped guide the Aztecs to four postseason berths - two NCAA and two NIT appearances. With Gottlieb on staff, SDSU earned a postseason berth for the first time in 17 years in 2001-02 with the Aztecs recording 21 victories and reaching the first round of the NCAA Tournament. In 2005-06, the Aztecs were 24-9 overall and 13-3 in the MWC, capturing both the league's regular-season and tournament titles, as well as an NCAA Tournament bid. SDSU also advanced to the second round of the NIT in 2007, compiling a 22-11 mark. San Diego State's 2010-11 team, which featured three senior starters comprised of Gottlieb's final recruiting class with the Aztecs, finished 34-3 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament sweet sixteen.

Gottlieb has recruited and coached a number of all-conference players The list includes All-Mountain West honorees Marcus Slaughter, Brandon Heath and Mohamed Abukar at San Diego State and All-Pac-10 selection and the 2011-12 NBA Most Improved Player Ryan Anderson and Pac-12 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, Jorge Gutierrez as well as Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Allen Crabbe at California.

Gottlieb started his coaching career as an assistant at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif., where he was part of staff that helped turn the program around from a one-win season in 1994-95 to a 16-win campaign in 1995-96. In 1997, Gottlieb moved to Sacramento State, where he served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. He then joined the San Diego State staff in 1999 under head coach Steve Fisher.

On the court, Gottlieb was a standout performer at El Modena High School in Orange, Calif., and a two-year letterman at Drake University in Iowa. After his playing career, he returned to California and earned his bachelor's degree in history with a minor in business from UCLA in 1995. He received an MBA from Cal Poly in 1997.

Gottlieb comes from an athletic family, as his father, Bob, is a former college coach who worked under Hall of Famer Jack Hartman at Kansas State and Eddie Sutton at Creighton. Bob Gottlieb was also head coach at Jacksonville and Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His brother, Doug, was a standout guard at Oklahoma State and currently serves as a basketball analyst for CBS Sports.

Gottlieb and his wife, Mandy, have three children, Gage (six), Tess (four) and Quinn (two).
