John Reeves, the driving force behind Cal's pitching success, completed his 20th season with the Golden Bear program in 2013. Reeves, who brings more than two decades of coaching experience to the field, has helped numerous Cal pitchers earn All-American accolades. Additionally, Reeves has coached two Golden Bears - Jolene Henderson and Kristina Thorson - to Cal's three Pac-10/12 Pitcher of the Year honors.
Most recently, in 2013 – ace Jolene Henderson’s final season – Reeves oversaw the senior on her way to becoming the winningest Golden Bear pitcher in program history. Henderson bested Cal legend Michele Granger with 130 wins, including a no-hitter at the Ann Arbor Regional in the final victory of her collegiate career. Henderson was selected third in the first round of the 2013 National Pro Fastpitch Draft by the Chicago Bandits.
Prior to the 2013 season, Reeves helped Henderson repeat as the conference pitcher of the year, going 38-4 with an impressive 1.29 ERA to also earn first-team All-America and Pac-12 laurels in 2012. Henderson shouldered almost 90 percent of the pitching for the 2011 Cal team that advanced to the Women's College World Series. In 2011, Henderson was lauded as the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year, marking the second time in program history that a Bear has earned that honor. Additionally, she was a first-team All-American, All-Region and All-Pac-10 selection. In her first year in a Cal uniform in 2010, Henderson was also honored for her pitching achievements as a member of the Pac-10 All-Freshman team. Both Henderson and Valerie Arioto were named to the All-Pacific Region first team.
Another disciple of Reeves, right-hander Arioto closed out her Cal career with a 1.32 ERA in 2012 along with first team All-America and All-Pac-12 status. Prior to redshirting the 2011 season, Arioto was lauded with placement on the 2010 All-Pac-10 first team and was named a Louisville Slugger/NFCA First-Team All-American. Additionally, in 2009, Reeves was instrumental in Arioto earning Easton All-America status, first-team All-Pac-10 selection and a third-team Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American.
In 2008, Reeves helped groom Marissa Drewrey into an all-conference and all-region pitcher (29 wins). Other All-American pitchers under Reeves' watch include Jocelyn Forest and Whitney Floyd. Cal graduate Kristina Thorson (36-10, 0.83 ERA in 2006) who was a three-time All-American from 2004-06.
Prior to his arrival at Cal in 1994, Reeves served as head softball coach at Lynbrook High School in San Jose, Calif. He led his teams to a combined 105-27 record over five years, including a Central Coast Section title. From 1987-93, he coached the Twin Creeks Diamonds ASA team, developing more than 30 players who earned positions on Division I softball teams. He has also served as a Bobby Sox and PAL coach for 12 years.
In addition to his coaching stints, Reeves has presented pitching techniques and strategies at various clinics, including the NFCA Softball Exposure Camp.
Reeves graduated from San Jose State with a bachelor's degree in liberal studies in 1980. He resides in Dublin.
