The No. 7 California Golden Bear women's golf team finished the Arizona Wildcat Invitational in second place, trailing only the host school, in their first tournament of the spring season. Junior Joanne Lee was just two strokes off the lead, ending the tournament in a tie for second place.

The two-day, 54-hole tournament began their final day finishing up the second round with many players, including four of Cal's five, needing to finish a hole or more as Day One was called to darkness before the end of the second round. The Bears, who were in second at the suspension, remained in second place after the completion of the second round, trailing Arizona by two strokes.

"I think this was a good first tournament of the spring," said head coach Nancy McDaniel. "After having had to play 36-holes the day before, I am really happy with our finish. We stayed in it."

The final round was played in challenging conditions with gusty winds all days hampering play on the 6,321 yard, par-72 course at the Vistoso Golf Club.

"We were unsatisfied with our wind play today," McDaniel said. "The wind really picked up the last nine holes. We haven't had to play in conditions like that for awhile and we showed that lack of experience."

In a round where only one player in a field of 80+ was under par, Joanne Lee had Cal's low round, shooting a 75 (+3). Lee birdied the second hole, going -3 on the second hole for the tournament, and also birdied six. Junior Daniela Holmqvist also birdied the par-5 sixth hole and also birdied the par-4 14th hole. Holmqvist shot an 80 in the third round. Emily Childs had Cal's only other birdie on the day, holing 13 in two strokes.

"Joanne had a very solid tournament," McDaniel said. "She played steady. She kept the ball in play all 54 holes. Her putting was strong. Her wedges came in for her, enabling her to convert key birdies on the par-5's."

The Bears finished 11 strokes back of Arizona and nine strokes ahead of third place Arizona State.

Joanne Lee, who entered the final round in a tie for first place, finished in a tie for second place at two-under for the tournament. Senior Pia Halbig, who shot a 76 in her final round, had a top-10 finish, tied for sixth at two-over.

"Pia had a rough finish to her final round, yet she was still right there with the top finishers, coming in tied for sixth," McDaniel noted.

The Bears will be in the Bay Area for their next two tournaments. They will play in the Peg Barnard Invitational at Stanford on Feb. 19-20. They will also play in the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational in San Jose, Feb. 28-Mar. 1.

"We are looking forward to putting together some good practices and then teeing it up at Stanford on the 19th," McDaniel said.
