Malibu, Calif. - The University of California women's tennis team improved to 4-0, defeating the Pepperdine Waves (3-6) by a 5-1 score in Malibu yesterday. Doubles were not played due to inclement weather.
Jieun Jacobs and Christina Fusano both rebounded from losses against Loyola Marymount on Saturday to impressive wins against the Waves. Jacobs defeated Alexandra Kujawska by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, and Fusano took her third win of the season with a straight set win over Karin Schlapbach, 6-4, 6-4. On the fourth court, Catherine Lynch rebounded from a 0-6 loss in her first set to drop Ana Anderson, 0-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Kristen Case has been especially impressive for the Bears this season, and picked up her third win of the season over Ceyda Keyman, 6-0, 6-4. Case, who was with the team last season but did not see any dual action, improved to 3-0, and has yet to lose a set. In fact, she has only lost nine games in her six matches, in contrast to winning 36.
The Bears return to Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley this weekend. They take on San Diego on Friday at 1:30 p.m., and then open their Pac-10 season against arch-rival Stanford Saturday at noon.
