BERKELEY - The 18th-ranked California Golden Bears rallied from a 4-3 deficit with a five-run third inning to take the lead for good en route to a 9-4 win over Santa Clara on Wednesday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field.
Cal (11-6) has never lost to Santa Clara and improved its all-time series record to 69-0 versus the Broncos. Freshman Christina Schallig extended her hitting streak to nine games after going 2-for-2 with two runs from the plate. Junior Erika Racklin went 3-for-5 with a triple, three runs, and two RBI, while sophomore Morgan Siegel scored two runs.
Marissa Drewrey collected the win, her fifth of the season, after relieving Brittany LaRosa in the second inning. Lauren Frankiewicz also saw action and registered eight strikeouts in four innings of work.
Santa Clara (1-15) got off to a productive start in the top of the first inning when Angela Kabanuck led off with a home run off of LaRosa. After Alyc Kalahama was issued a walk, Ashley Blier's single to center field plated Kalahama, giving SCU a 2-0 lead.
Cal chipped into the Bronco lead in the bottom half of the frame with a run courtesy of a Katie Vickers single to right field which scored Racklin from third base.
Santa Clara added to their lead in the top of the second with another run after Sara Overmier delivered a single to left field to score Ashley Grove.
That lead did not last long as California responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to knot the score at 3-3. After consecutive groundouts, Siegel drew a two-out walk, which was followed by a Racklin single to advance Siegel to second base. After a wild pitch moved the runners, Schallig punched a single thru the left side to plate both Siegel and Racklin.
The Broncos, however, re-took the lead with a run in the top of the third when Nori Kamada hit a single to score Kalahama, putting Santa Clara up 4-3.
Cal flexed its offensive firepower and took over in the bottom of the stanza with five runs. Vickers led off the inning with a single to right field, and moved to second base after Alex Sutton drew a walk. After SCU made a pitching change (Jackie Morales for Lauren Passafuime), Vernae Sevilla placed a sacrifice bunt to advance Vickers to third and Sutton to second. Two batters later Taylor Kelly slipped a bunt single down the line to score Vickers. Sutton was then able to score after SCU first baseman, Noelani Hoopii mishandled the ball. After Siegel drew another walk, Racklin cranked a triple to the center field wall to score both Kelly and Siegel. Two batters later, Bernice Masaniai belted a single to center to plate Racklin, giving the Bears an 8-4 lead.
California added another run in the fourth after Siegel's double to left field scored Julie Meyer.
