(BERKELEY) - Isi Sofele will chat live with the Contra Costa Times' Bear Talk blog on Wednesday, Aug. 31, beginning at 3:30 p.m. PT. The chat with the Golden Bears' starting tailback three days before the team's season-opener will be moderated by Cal football beat writer Jonathan Okanes of the Contra Costa Times.
Sofele has played in all 25 games possible with two starts over his first two collegiate seasons in 2009 and '10. Cal's active career leader in both rushing and kick return yards has moved into the team's starting tailback role to begin the 2011 campaign after contributing 420 rushing yards and one score on the ground over 81 carries (5.2 ypr) during his first two seasons. Sofele was playing a third-stringer behind Jahvid Best and Shane Vereen during his 2009 true freshman campaign, before becoming Vereen's backup as a sophomore in 2010 when he put up the bulk of his rushing numbers with 338 rushing yards on 69 carries.
Sofele has also contributed to the team's return game, combining for 442 yards on 22 kick returns (20.1 ypr) over his first two campaigns. In addition, he has eight catches for 54 yards and two scores, totaling 916 all-purpose yards. He also has 15 tackles, primarily on special teams where he has seen significant action as a gunner.
Cal will kick off its 2011 season against Fresno State in the TicketCity Battle by the Bay at San Francisco's Candlestick Park this Saturday, Sept. 3. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. PT.
Single-game tickets for the contest are on sale now and can be purchased online at CalBears.com, or by calling the Cal Athletic Ticket Office at (800) GO BEARS. The neutral-site season opener for both teams is not part of the 2011 Cal football season-ticket package.
Tickets are also on sale for Cal's five home games this season at San Francisco's AT&T Park. Cal will host Pac-12 opponents USC (Thu., Oct. 13), Utah (Sat., Oct. 22), Washington State (Sat., Nov. 5) and Oregon State (Sat., Nov. 12) at the venue after playing a non-conference contest against Presbyterian in its home opener on Sat., Sept. 17.
After playing the last 88 seasons and every home game at Memorial Stadium since the facility opened for the 1923 Big Game, Cal will host its home games outside of Berkeley in 2011 for the first time since Memorial Stadium opened while the venue undergoes an extensive renovation and retrofit. For updates on the progress of the renovation and retrofit of Memorial Stadium as well as the Memorial Stadium webcam, visit stadium.berkeley.edu.
