The California Golden Bear women's basketball team (6-2) sailed to a 82-56 victory over the Long Beach State 49ers (1-10). Sophomore forward DeNesha Stallworth scored a season-high 27 points. Sophomore center Talia Caldwell had her second double double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Cal jumped out to a 10-4 lead on a layup by Stallworth with 14:48 left in the first half. The 49ers came scrambling back into the game, pulling within a basket, 12-10, with just under 13:30 left in the first half. Back-to-back Stallworth layups gave Cal some breathing room, making it a 16-10 contest.
After two scoreless minutes for both teams, Long Beach got a layup to make it a four point game, 16-12, with just over 10:30 left in the period. An 8-3 Cal run, punctuated by a three-pointer from freshman guard Lindsay Sherbert, gave Cal a nine-point lead with just under seven minutes to play, and gave the Bears the momentum swing. A layup by Caldwell with just under five left in the half put Cal up by double digits, 30-19 for the first time. A pair of Caldwell free throws capped the half to give the Bears a 38-24 lead at the break.
Cal came back after the break, taking up where they left off, pushing the lead to 20, 48-28, two and a half minutes into the period. The 49ers would get the score back to 19, 54-35, with just over 14 minutes remaining, but a three by senior guard Rachelle Federico ended the charge. The Bears cruised the rest of the way to earn the 82-56 victory.
"It was a good game for us going into break and coming off of Texas A&M," said head coach Joanne Boyle. "I thought we had a lot of energy. All of the statistical categories were great for us."
Stallworth dominated the low post, scoring a season-high 27 points in just 30 minutes of play. Sophomore guard Eliza Pierre set up many of Stallworth's chances, with six assists. Pierre also had eight points of her own with six rebounds, three steals, and a blocked shot.
Caldwell was dominant on the glass, grabbing 9 offensive rebounds. She ended the game with 11 total boards to go with 17 points, tying a career high for scoring. It was Caldwell's second double double of the season.
Caldwell set the tone of the game early, grabbing three offensive rebounds in the first minute of the game. The Bears, who have won the rebounding battle in all but one game this season, pulled in 15 more rebounds than the 49ers. It was the fifth time this season that the Bears have outrebounded an opponent by 10 or more. Every Cal player had at least one rebound in the game.
With the win, the Bears improve to 6-2 overall on the season and are a perfect 6-0 at home. They head to Las Vegas next weekend, participating in the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Tournament. They will take on UT Arlington on Sunday, Dec. 19 followed by Texas Tech on Monday. Dec. 20.
