BERKELEY - The No. 7 California men's gymnastics team returns to team action Feb. 12 against No. 5 Stanford and No. 1 Oklahoma. The meet, which will be held at Haas Pavilion and be free for all to attend, is a combined meet with the Cal women's gymnastics team, which takes on Stanford. Just three regular-season meets stand between the Bears and the postseason.
Men's Gymnastics To Host 100-Year Celebration
In honor of the 100-year anniversary of California men's gymnastics, the Golden Bears along with Bear Backers are inviting fans, former student-athletes and family members to a celebration event on Saturday, Feb. 11. The event will be held at the newly opened, state-of-the-art Simpson Center for Student-Athlete High Performance on the Cal campus.
Glen Ishino Makes National Team, Is MPSF Gymnast of the Week
Competing with the best gymnasts in the United States at the Winter Cup Challenge, California senior Glen Ishino not only proved that he can compete with them but that he can beat them. On one of the biggest stages in all of domestic gymnastics, Ishino earned himself a spot on the U.S. senior team. The men's program committee selected Ishino while other gymnasts landed spots based on all-around scores or team points. Ishino won pommel horse with a two-night total of 31.450, finishing well ahead of his nearest competitor in second place with a 30.650.
Last Week in the Gym
Current Golden Bears Donothan Bailey, Glen Ishino and Steven Lacombe along with former letterwinners Kyle Bunthuwong and Bryan del Castillo all competed in the Feb. 2 Winter Cup qualifier with Del Castillo, Bailey, Ishino and Bunthuwong all advancing to Saturday's finals. In the qualifying session, Lacombe performed on rings (13.600) and vault (14.700). Bunthuwong finished 14th in the two-night all-around with 167.050 points and took 10th on high bar (28.400). Bailey was 16th in the all-around, notching a combined total of 165.550 points, and claiming seventh on pommel.
