The Cal Football team begins its initial preparations for the 2001 season with 29 freshmen and junior college players checking in Monday.
The newcomers, which include 15 scholarship freshmen, three junior college players and 11 walk-ons, will undergo physicals and strength testing Monday afternoon. The group will then participate in workouts at both 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday at Witter Field.
Returning players are back on campus Thursday afternoon and the entire team will have its first practice on Saturday at 10 a.m. on Witter Field.
The Bears will also work out Saturday at 4 p.m., Sunday at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and Monday at 7 p.m. in Berkeley. On Aug. 14, the team travels to the Cal State Stanislaus campus and will have its first practice in Turlock at 6 p.m. that afternoon. Cal will remain in Turlock through Aug. 24, when the team returns to Berkeley.
The unusual schedule, with practices in Berkeley first before the trip to Turlock, is due to the fact that summer school at Cal is in session through Aug. 17 and the early weekend workouts on campus will help minimize missed practice time.
Once the team is back in Berkeley, the Bears will participate in the annual family FunZone at Kleeberger Field on Sunday, Aug. 26, starting at 12:30 p.m. The season opener is Sept. 1 against Illinois at 12:30 p.m. in Memorial Stadium.
