(GLENVIEW, IL) - Six players affiliated with the Cal men's golf program opened action Tuesday in the 109th Western Amateur at the North Shore Country Club.
Brandon Hagy is the top Cal affiliate on the scoreboard at the end of the first day after shooting even-par 71 and closing his first round tied for 28th on the leader board. Hagy had six birdies, including three in a row on holes five-seven. He also had birdies on nine, 12 and 16 to offset four bogeys and a double bogey.
Incoming freshman Michael Kim and former Cal golfer George Gandranata each shot one-over par 72 and are tied for 47th. All three of Kim's birdies came on a four-hole stretch (11, 12, 14). He had four bogeys. Gandranata had back-to-back birdies on 11 and 12, as well as three bogeys.
Michael Weaver and Max Homa are tied for 102nd place after each shot four-over par 75. Weaver's only birdie came on the 12th hole. He had five bogeys. Homa's up-and-down round included four birdies (1, 12, 14, 16), six bogeys and a double bogey. Ben An is tied for 146th after a nine-over par 80. His lone birdie was on the 10th hole, while he suffered eight bogeys and a double.
Jordan Spieth and Chris Williams are tied for the lead at the end of the first day after both fired opening-round scores of five-under par 66.
Tuesday's action was suspended with eight players still on the course due to lightning and impending thunderstorms. Second-round play begins Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. CT/5:30 a.m. PT. The event continues through Saturday, Aug. 6.
