BERKELEY - Joseph A. Reichel Jr., alumnus and strong supporter of Cal men's soccer, passed away peacefully Dec. 13, 2005, at his home in San Francisco with his wife, Anita, at his side.

Reichel, 92, was a member of the Cal soccer team from 1933-36 and continued to play soccer well into his 70s at the annual Cal soccer alumni game. He was an avid Cal soccer fan and financial supporter of the program. He was president of the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity and graduated from Cal in 1936.

"Joe was an incredible human being," said head coach Kevin Grimes. "His passion for Cal and in particular the sport of soccer was deeper than anyone could imagine. He was a regular attendee and player at all of our alumni games and annual banquet. Even into his early 90's Joe still attended Cal soccer games in the spring and regular season. He was a great personal friend of mine and the Cal soccer family is going to miss him sorely."

Memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m., Jan. 7, 2006 at St. Brendan's Church, 29 Rockaway Ave., at Ulloa St., San Francisco. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Red Cross.
