BERKELEY - The California women's basketball team has seven seniors which play their final regular season home games at Haas Pavilion this week. Here's what senior guard/forward Brook Coulter will remember most about her one year on the team.
As I wrap up five years at Cal as a student-athlete, I couldn't be happier to write about the extraordinary memories, so far, from the 2000-2001 Cal women's basketball team. My journey to the team came in the way of four years of volleyball and one great opportunity to represent Cal athletics for a fifth year on the basketball team. The decision to play and dedicate myself to a program on the rise was probably one of the best decisions I have made while attending Cal.
How could it not be? I show up everyday to practice to a team full of energy and life. There is not a day that goes by that someone doesn't bring a smile to my face and laughter to the air. I show up everyday to a coaching staff that has dedicated themselves beyond the imaginable to prepare and inspire us to give our all. I show up to every game not having a doubt in my mind that we will compete and win the game. And, I show up to a family that has truly come together to accomplish the unimaginable.
For five years, there has always been a school across the bay I have never been able to beat. The eagerness and desire to defeat the Stanford Cardinal came to an end at the most memorable win in my athletic career. Words can not explain the excitement and pride I was feeling when the clock hit 0:00 and the California Golden Bears had beat the Cardinal on their own court and broke a long standing edge Stanford has had over Cal. To watch my teammates (especially the seniors) celebrate in joy after leaving everything they had on the court was amazing. To see so many Cal supporters from the band to the athletic department personnel able to witness such a great game was unbelievable. It made me truly feel like a proud Cal Bear!
The memories developing from this year's basketball team whether it be my own accomplishments or the numerous team accomplishments will never be forgotten. The 2000-01 women's basketball team is a team that has come together and fought hard for the team chemistry needed to be successful. We have set the standard for Cal women's basketball and that is a memory within itself to cherish and take with me always.
