BERKELEY, CALIF. - Trailing 2-1 at halftime, the No. 2-ranked Cal men's water polo team outscored No. 7 Long Beach State, 9-3, in the second half on the way to a 10-5 victory over the 49ers Saturday in an MPSF match at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears, led by three goals from senior Jeff Tyrrell and two goals from senior Michael Sharf, improved to 19-2 overall and 4-0 in league play. Long Beach State dropped to 14-9 and 1-3 in conference.

In a tightly defended first half, Cal scored first when junior Frank Reynolds knocked in a skip shot with 2:14 in the first period. The 49ers came back to score a pair of goals in the second period for the 2-1 halftime lead. Jake Krinne scored on a counterattack with 7:16 in the second period when his shot hit the sidebar and ricochet into the goal. Reid Tomassi then gave Long Beach State its 2-1 lead when he knocked in a shot after a penalty whistle had stopped play with 2:57 left in the half.

The second half was all Cal as Tyrrell scored on a skip shot with 7:24 in the third the tie the contest, 3-3, and then junior Trent Calder gave the Bears a 3-2 lead with a goal from two-meters on a man-up advantage with 6:24 in the third. Ashley Blythen tied the match for the 49ers, 3-3, with a score at 5:51 in the period, but Tyrrell scored again at 2:16 in the third period to begin a streak of seven-straight goals for Cal.

With a commanding 10-3 lead for the Bears, the 49ers were able to get within 10-5 by scoring the final two goals with 2:57 left on the contest. Both Cal goalie Mark Sheredy and Long Beach State goalie Steven MacKenzie finished with 11 saves on the day.

Cal will next play Santa Clara in a non-conference match on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
