This Week: The No. 4 California Golden Bears face No. 8 Wisconsin this Sunday, April 15, at Redwood Shores. The Bears will be looking for a victory after losing to then-No. 7 Stanford in the San Diego Crew Classic two weeks ago. The loss to the Cardinal was only Cal's second regular season varsity loss since the Bears fell to Washington in a dual race, April 24, 2004; the prior loss came at the hands of Stanford a year before in the San Diego Crew Classic.
Cal vs. Wisconsin: The Bears last faced Wisconsin at the 2006 Stanford Invitational when Cal's varsity eight defeated the Badgers by 3.7 seconds. The Bears faced Wisconsin in 2005 when the Badgers fell to Cal in the Windermere Crew Classic. The Bears also faced Wisconsin in the 2003 Windermere Crew Classic with the Bears varsity eight defeating the Badgers by a mere one second. Prior to that, the Bears faced Wisconsin in the 2002 Stanford Invitational, winning the varsity eight race by six seconds and the JV eight race by 10 seconds.
San Diego Crew Classic Recap (March 31 - April, 2007): For a second consecutive year then-No. 7 Stanford defeated then-No. 2 California by just over one second in the Copley Cup Grand Final. The Bears held a lead for the first 1500 meters, but the Cardinal edged out Cal coming out atop as the boats crossed the finish line. Cal won its other three grand final races as the Bears defeated Orange Coast, Oregon State and Stanford RC in the Novice 8, JV 8, and Open 8 respectively.
Upcoming Races: After this weekend the Bears have two regular season races remaining on their schedule. Cal will face Stanford on Saturday, April 21, at Redwood Shores. In dual competition, the Bears have defeated Stanford 16 consecutive years and 56 of the 73 times the two teams have faced each other, dating back to 1902. The Huskies will host Cal on Saturday, April 28, at Montlake Cut. The Bears have defeated Washington six of the past eight years, including victories the past two years.
