LOS ANGELES, CA - The California men's water polo team (3-2) finished seventh at last weekend's Southern California Tournament at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium in Los Angeles. The Bears got off to a shaky start against No. 14, Air Force. Up 7-3 at the half, the Falcons scored five points in the third period to Cal's one goal to tie the game at eight apiece. Rob Arroyo's goal with 6:28 left in the fourth quarter sealed the first round match for the Bears, as they went on to win 10-9. In their second Saturday game, Cal dropped a close match to their fifth-ranked counterparts, UC Irvine despite staging a three goal comeback in the last quarter. The Bears were held scoreless in the first thirteen and a half minutes of the contest. Irvine's Dan Hayes scored with 38 seconds left in the fourth quarter to give the Anteaters the win. Cal had just as difficult of a match against No. 8 Pacific in their first game on Sunday. After falling behind 5-2 after three quarters of play, the Bears scored three goals in the fourth quarter to even the match at 5-5. But Pacific's Dan Hayes slipped a two-pointer past goalie Kevin Ahasey with three seconds left to give the tigers the win. The Bears rebounded against Long Beach State in another hard-fought match. After going up 4-1, Cal let their lead slip in the third quarter as the 49ers tied the game at 4-4. Rob Arroyo scored his second game-winning goal of the tournament with 1:15 to go, giving the Bears a 5-4 victory. Stanford was the tournament winner, defeating USC in the tournament finals, 11-10, in overtime. Jerry Smith was named to the All-Tournament Second Team after chalking up nine goals in the tournament, including a five- goal effort against Air Force. The Bears return to Berkeley this weekend for two games. Cal will take on the Alumni at 11 a.m. on Saturday before battling UCLA at noon on Sunday.
