BLACKSBURG, Va. - The 17th-ranked California men's soccer team was eliminated from the NCAA College Cup when it fell to No. 11 seed Virginia Tech, 3-2, Wednesday night at Tech Soccer Stadium in Blacksburg, Va. In what turned out to be his final game as a Golden Bear, senior Javier Ayala-Hil recorded both scores for Cal. The Bears end the 2007 campaign with a final record of 12-6-2, while Virginia Tech improved to 12-3-5.
"He's had a great career, obviously," said Cal head coach Kevin Grimes about Ayala-Hil. "He certainly saved a two-goal performance for a big stage, which was great. Scoring two goals in his final game, I think he goes away happy and proud, individually."
Cal trailed by two goals twice during the contest, but the Bears never stopped fighting. The Hokies scored the first two goals of the match before Ayala-Hil notched his first goal. In the 59th minute, Ayala-Hil collected a blocked shot off the foot of freshman Andrew Wiedeman. He dribbled to his right and booted the ball in the corner of the goal to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
Virginia Tech appeared to put the game out of reach in the 85th minute, when it scored for the third time. Although Ayala-Hil tallied his second goal of the game with 30 seconds left in the match, Cal couldn't get the ball back down the field to have a chance to tie the game.
Wiedeman, who earned assists on both goals, ended the season as the Bears' point leader with 20. He also finished the year as Cal's leader in goals (7) and assists (6). Ayala-Hil finished second on the team in points (15), goals (5) and tied for second in assists (5).
"For the season as a whole, the players walk away as Pac-10 champions for the second consecutive year," Grimes said. "They did amazing things throughout the year that they should all be proud of. At the end of the day, these guys are champions, Pac-10 champions once again, and nobody's ever going to take that away from them."
