Stanley Resigns As California Women's Basketball Coach
March 13, 2000
BERKELEY - Marianne Stanley has resigned as head coach of California's women's basketball team, athletic director John Kasser announced today.
Stanley was hired April 11, 1996, and has since posted a 35-75 (.318) overall record and a 16-56 (.222) Pac-10 mark in four seasons with the Golden Bears. This past season, Cal posted an 11-17 record and finished eighth in the Pac-10 with a 6-12 mark.
"I am resigning to pursue other opportunities," said Stanley. "I wish everyone in the Cal program continued success."
"We appreciate Marianne's efforts over the last four years," said Kasser. "We wish her well in her future endeavors."
Kasser indicated that a national search for a new coach would begin immediately. He did not indicate a specific timetable for the hiring as many of the potential candidates could be involved in post-season tournaments and thus wouldn't be immediately available for interviews.
"We anticipate there will be a lot of interest in this coaching opportunity," said Kasser. "A new coach will be excited about the benefits of a superior home facility in Haas Pavilion and the promise which six seniors bring to next season."
