BERKELEY - After arriving at Cal for the spring semester as a transfer from City College of San Francisco, junior linebacker Desmond Bishop quickly established himself as a potential impact player for the Bears. As a junior college standout, Bishop was voted the California JC Player of the Year last fall and earned first team All-America status after averaging almost 12 tackles per game.
In an ongoing series of player profiles during training camp, CalBears.com sat down with Bishop to get his thoughts on the transition from junior college to a Division I program and the upcoming season.
How is camp going so far?
Desmond Bishop: "It's going well. The defense is kind of new to the schemes and there are new faces, but as camp goes on, we are coming together as far as playing together and knowing the plays. It's coming along well."
What are the differences between playing at a junior college and playing at Cal?
Desmond Bishop: "I think it's a little more serious (at Cal) because of the fact that this is Division I. Also, the hours are more extreme because at junior college the practice is only two hours, but here it's sun up to sun down with meetings and practice, so it's a lot harder."
How has the transition been from San Francisco CC to playing at Cal?
Desmond Bishop: "I'm adjusting pretty well. I'm not exactly sure why, but I think that it's my passion for the game. Whatever the coaches say and whatever the schedule is, I am willing to follow it to the best of my ability."
What game are you looking forward to this season?
Desmond Bishop: "We have to take one game at a time, so that is what I am going to do. I am looking forward to all the games but everybody knows the USC game is number one."
What do you hope to accomplish this season being a transfer?
Desmond Bishop: "Usually, junior college players have to take a year to make the transition, but I want to make the transition right now so when the first game comes I will be totally prepared."
What is your favorite thing about Cal so far?
Desmond Bishop: "Just hanging with my teammates and having a good time. It's nice having some teammates from SFCC here, like Lavelle Hawkins and Fahim (Mujaahid Abd Allah)."
