ATHENS, Ga. - Cal senior Raquel Kops-Jones, seeded No. 1 in the NCAA singles championships, advanced into the quarterfinals today at the 2004 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships in Athens, Ga. by virtue of a walk-over in a Round of 16 singles match over BYU's Barbara Zahnova. Zahnova was forced to default the match due to injury.
Kops-Jones will play Miami's No. 6-seeded Megan Bradley tomorrow in a quarterfinal match at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The winner of that match will move forward into the semifinals.
Bradley, ranked No. 4 in the nation, defeated Florida's Jennifer Magley, 6-2, 7-5, to advance to tomorrow's match. Earlier this season, Kops-Jones defeated Bradley, 6-3, 6-3, in the first round of the ITA All-American tournament on Oct. 9, 2003.
Kops-Jones, the No. 1 ranked player in collegiate tennis, improves to 31-7 overall in singles competition this season. Last season at the NCAA championships, Kops-Jones advanced as far as the singles quarterfinals before falling. The only Cal player to ever advance past the quarterfinals in the NCAA singles championship is former Golden Bear great Lisa Albano, who reached the finals in 1991.
