RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The California Golden Bears finished second in the team competition at the 2004 Pac-10 Rowing Championships held Sunday, May 16th at Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova. The varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four all finished second behind top seeded Washington in their respective grand finals. The freshman eight won its second straight Pac-10 title.

In the marquee race for the men, the varsity eight race, the Bears got out to a good start, stroking to a seven-seat lead. Cal held its lead through the 1500-meter mark but was beginning to feel the pressure from Washington. In the last 200 meters, the Huskies made their move and shot by the Bears to take their second straight Pac-10 title. Washington's split in the last 500 meters was the fastest in the field, and their fastest of the entire race.

Cal began the second varsity eight race fast. At the 500 meter mark they were dead even with Washington, but that is where the Huskies made their move. The Bears tried to stay with the Huskies but couldn't match their quick pace, Washington extended their lead with every stroke. Cal crossed the finish line eight seconds behind the Huskies to take the silver medal.

Cal's freshman eight won its second straight title with its win in the grand final. With this win, the Bears remain undefeated on the year and will head into the IRA's confident they can contend for the national title.

The varsity four finished second behind top ranked Washington. Cal was the defending champion from a year ago, but could not catch the Huskies after their fast start. The Bears finioshed three seconds behind Washington.
