LOS ANGELES - The No. 8 California women's tennis team (7-3, 2-0 Pac-10) got the 4-3 win over No. 11 UCLA (9-4, 0-0 Pac-10) today at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Golden Bears needed four wins in singles play to clinch the win with the final victory coming on court three from senior No. 41 Cristina Visico as she defeated No. 27 Andrea Remynse in a thrilling three-set match that went to a tiebreaker. Visico dropped the first set by a 6-1 score but bounced back to win the second convincingly, holding Remynse to just two games. The third set went the distance as Visico took to the tiebreaker and fought her way to a 7-2 victory, to give Cal the team win.

The Bears got off to a slow start, falling to the Bruins on all three doubles courts. The No. 53-ranked duo of seniors Susie Babos and Stephanie Kusano were able to hold their serve to win five games against the No. 30 doubles team of Tracy Lin and Riza Zalameda but the Bruins persisted and swept the doubles matches to earn the all-important doubles point.

In singles play, junior Claire Ilcinkas tied things up for the Bears with a 6-3, 6-1 win on court four over Ashley Joelson. Shortly after Ilcinkas' win, Kusano toppled Anna-Viktoria Lind on court six to give the Bears their first lead of the day. Junior Bojana Bobusic had a tough time on court five against Elizabeth Lumpkin, falling in a 6-2, 6-3 loss to give the Bruins back the tie. Freshman Marina Cossou then snagged a lead for the Bears once more with her 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 win on court two over Tracy Lin.

Going three sets on court one, No. 7 Babos faced fellow senior No. 10 Zalameda and pushed Zalameda to a third set to come within a single game of tying the set up but fell short, giving up the 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win. The loss on court one tied the team score one last time at three points apiece. Visico's win on court three completed play and clinched the seventh win of the season for the Bears with only three losses.

The Bears return to Berkeley to host their next four dual matches beginning with the College William & Mary Wednesday, March 5 in a 1:30 p.m. start before Arizona State and Arizona come in for a weekend of tennis at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Please check CalBears.com for up-to-date information.
