LAS VEGAS - Sixth-ranked California (6-2) lost to 14th-ranked Northwestern, 3-0, and later routed Wright State, 8-1, on Saturday night at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic hosted by UNLV. The Golden Bears two-hit Wright State but suffered a one-hit loss to the Wildcats.

Cal sophomore catcher Julie Meyer's two-run homer and freshman pitcher Lauren Frankiewicz's seven strikeout performance highlighted the win over Wright State in the Bears' second game of the night. The Bears scored in five of their six innings, with senior Haley Woods, playing first base, driving in senior left fielder Lindsay James on an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning. Senior second baseman Emily Friedman later reached base on a Wright State throwing error, allowing Woods to score from third and give Cal a 2-0 lead.

Wright State got one back in the top of the second inning, with left fielder Kristen Farley hitting a solo home run to cut the lead to 2-1. The Raiders, who committed four errors against Cal, gave up an unearned run to the Bears in the bottom half of the inning when freshman shortstop Carly Winger doubled and advanced to third on a fielding error that allowed right fielder Morgan Siegel to score. James hit an RBI single to score Winger and give Cal a 4-1 lead after two.

In the bottom of the third, Meyer's homer drove in Friedman, who had been hit by a pitch, and Cal led 6-1. In the fourth, with James on first and Winger on second, Woods reached on a fielder's choice. James was thrown out at second on the play, but Winger scored on an ensuing throwing error. Cal led 7-1.

After Cal sophomore pinch hitter Jessica Moore doubled in the bottom of the sixth, freshman Gina Leomiti hit a one-out triple to score Moore. Frankiewicz, who only allowed a single after Farley's homer, retired the side in the top of the seventh to preserve the 8-1 victory and improve her record to 3-0. Raiders starter Amanda Cody, relieved by Ashley Clapsaddle with the bases loaded in the fourth, took the loss.

In the earlier game, Wildcats starter Eileen Canney stymied the Bears, striking out 14 and allowing just one hit, a two-out single by Leomiti in the fifth inning. James drew Cal's lone walk, while both sophomore Katie Vickers and Friedman reached base on Northwestern errors.

Designated hitter Kristen Amegin collected two RBI off of Cal senior starter Kristina Thorson (3-2), getting a sacrifice fly in the first and a solo homer in the third. Catcher Jamie Dotson added an RBI single in the first for the Wildcats, who improved to 6-3.

Cal closes out its stay in Las Vegas with a game against tournament host UNLV at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
