DAVIS, CALIF. - Seven different players scored, including three goals from senior Ivan Rackov, as No. 3-ranked Cal defeated No. 12 UC Davis, 13-6, in a non-conference match Saturday morning at the Schaal Aquatic Center in Davis. With the win, Golden Bears extend their winning streak to five games and improves to 19-3 overall.
Cal wasted no time in establishing dominance in the match, outscoring the Aggies, coached by former Bear player and assistant women's water polo coach Steve Doten, 3-1 in the first period and holding a 7-2 advantage at the half. Cal extended its lead to 11-3 after three periods,
Besides the scoring of Rackov - who leads the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in scoring with 62 goals in 21 matches - senior Charlie Steffens, junior Marin Balarin and sophomores Collins Smith and Perry Short had two goals apiece. Junior Justin Parsons and senior Wil Toppen split time at goalkeeper and collected two saves apiece.
The Bears will next face their Bay Area rival, Stanford, Nov. 19 at Stanford (time TBA), before entering the MPSF Tournament, Nov. 25-27, at UCLA. The Bears (second in the MPSF standings with a 6-1 league mark) are looking for a high seed entering the conference championship. The winner of the MPSF tournament is the automatic qualifier into the NCAA Championship, hosted Dec. 3-4 at Cal's Spieker Aquatics Complex.
