CORVALLIS, Ore. - No. 2 California jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back Friday afternoon, defeating No. 20 Oregon State, 4-2, in Pac-10 play at the OSU Softball Complex. Sophomore C Haley Woods led the Bears' offense with two home runs and four RBIs as California extended its winning streak to six.

Junior 3B Vicky Galindo and sophomore LF Lindsay James opened the first inning for California (44-11 overall, 11-8 Pac-10) with back-to-back singles just in time for Woods to jack her team-leading 15th homer of the year over the center field fence, handing the Bears an early 3-0 lead.

Oregon State (40-24 overall, 4-15 Pac-10) tried to narrow the Bears' lead in the second when sophomore C Lisa Allen led-off the bottom of the frame with her own team-leading 11th home run of the season - and third this year against Cal - over the left-center field fence.

Woods responded to the Beavers run just moments later, blasting her 16th home run, and second of the game, off Oregon State's left field scoreboard to leadoff the third inning, returning Cal's lead to three, 4-1. That was just fine with junior P Kelly Anderson (23-8), who picked up the win for the Bears, allowing five hits over seven innings and striking out four.

Senior P Monica Hoffman (19-15) settled in for Oregon State following Woods' second long ball, retiring 15 straight batters to close out the contest, but by then the damage had been done. Hoffman finished with five strikeouts to up her season total to 238, just eight shy of the school record. It was her 67th career complete game.

The Beavers threatened again in the fifth with a leadoff single by sophomore CF Adrienne Alo that was followed by a walk to freshman DP Brianne McGowen, but Oregon State failed to capitalize after Alo was caught in a rundown and junior pinch runner Carrie Syphers was thrown out during the play. Three hits in the sixth produced another run for the Beavers and Allen's second RBI of the game, but that would prove to be it for Oregon State.

"Defensively we played well, but we made too many mental mistakes for this time of the year and against that caliber of an opponent," said Oregon State head coach Kirk Walker.

California concludes the regular season with a Pac-10 double-header in Eugene Saturday against the No. 13 Oregon Ducks. The first game is set to begin at 12 noon.
