BERKELEY - Cal held its annual Pro Day at Witter Rugby Field on Wednesday with 17 former Golden Bears working out for personnel assembled from nearly every NFL team.
WR/RET Jeremy Ross, who was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine two weeks ago, had an impressive day. Ross posted a 40-yard dash that was clocked as fast as 4.39 and was the best mark of the day. The mark would have tied for seventh overall and been tied for third among receivers at the combine. Ross also put up a time of 4.15 in the 20-yard shuttle and had a vertical jump of 39 inches.
"I think I did well and was able to show the scouts a lot," said Ross. "This event gives me a great opportunity to showcase what I can do. They can see me in person and put me through whatever they want to see."
The latter two Ross marks were both the second-best of the day behind DB Bryant Nnabuife, who posted a 40-inch vertical jump and a time of 4.06 in the 20-yard shuttle.
A pair of other notable performances came from OL Richard Fisher, who bench pressed 225 pounds 27 times and added a 32 ½ inch vertical leap.
The three-plus-hour session begin with registration at 9 a.m. and was followed by the players being measured for their height, weight, hand width and arm length. The three tests in the weight room were the bench press, vertical jump and broad jump. The group then moved to the field where they conducted the 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle, 3 cone drill and 60-yard shuttle. Players wrapped up the event by participating in positional drills.
A trio of former Cal players that participated at the 2011 NFL Scouting Combine two weeks ago - DL Cameron Jordan, LB Mike Mohamed and TB Shane Vereen - only took part in the positional drills portion of Wednesday's event after posting their marks in the measurable drills at the combine. S Chris Conte, also a participant at the combine, was limited in the measurable drills he participated in on Wednesday.
The complete group that participated in at least one portion of Pro Day included DL Keith Browner, Conte, OL Donovan Edwards, Fisher, OL Chris Guarnero, DB Darian Hagan, DL Derrick Hill, Jordan, LB Jerome Meadows, Mohamed, Nnabuife, OL Marvin Philip, LB Jarred Price, Riley, Ross, FB Will Ta'ufo'ou and Vereen.
All but Philip ('05) and Ta'ufo'ou ('08) completed their collegiate eligibility in 2010.
"Pro Day is really about being able to demonstrate your potential and what you're capable of doing," said Cal head strength and conditioning coach Mike Blasquez. "Some of the guys that got out there today did a nice job of that."
Pro Day is one of the tools used by NFL teams in preparation for the NFL Draft, which will take place Thursday-Saturday, Apr. 28-30, 2011, from Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
Cal has made a strong showing in the NFL Draft over the years with 25 former Cal players being selected in the first round, including the only two first-round picks from the Pac-10 in 2010 with the selections of DT Tyson Alualu (10th overall, Jacksonville Jaguars) and RB Jahvid Best (30th overall, Detroit Lions). The Bears have had six first-round picks and 32 overall selections since Jeff Tedford became the team's head coach in 2002.
