Day one of prelims at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming Short Course National Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center concluded Wednesday night, with several Cal Bears making positive strides in the water.
This four-day event includes 1,000 different athletes, many of whom are Olympians, world champions and record holders, including former Cal great Natalie Coughlin.
Junior Madison Kennedy earned a ninth place finish in the 50 free prelims with a time of 22.72. Coughlin continued her dominance in the event with a first place time of 21.93. Senior Emily Silver also was solid, placing 11th with a time of 22.83.
Silver also competed in the prelims of the 200 IM and garnered a time of 1:59.77, well enough for sixth. Fellow teammate Rachel Ridgeway placed tenth with a time of 2:00.76.
Former Golden Bear Ashley Chandler competed in the 500 free and recorded a time of 4:51.19 for an 11th place finish.
