No. 3 Cal in Second in NCAA West Regional Hunt

STANFORD, Calif. - No. 3 California is in second place Friday and within striking distance of UCLA after two rounds of the NCAA West Regional. The Golden Bears, who are also seeded third, carded the best team score of the day at plus-one 289 and have a 36-hole score of 579 heading into Saturday's final round at Stanford Golf Course.

The top-seeded Bruins are only four shots ahead of the Bears at minus-one 575 after Friday's score of 293. Rounding out the top five are host-Stanford at 590, Denver at 601 and Texas and Georgia are tied for fifth at 602.

UCLA's Hanna Jun maintained her spot atop the leader board. Jun is at minus-six 138, three shots ahead of Ohio State's Allison Hanna.

Led by senior Anna Temple, three Cal golfers are in the top 10. Temple fired an even-par 72 and is tied for fourth at 143 (-1). Senior Sarah Huarte, a member of the U.S. Curtis Cup team, is tied for sixth at 144 after leading the Bears with a 71 today. Sophomore Sofie Andersson finished with a 73 in the second round, tying her for ninth at 145.

Cal sophomore Sophia Sheridan also is having a strong tournament. The second team All-Pac-10 selection is tied for 17th at 147 following her round of 73. Senior Claire Dury posted a 77, five shots better than her opening round performance.

Behind seven birdies, the Bears' top four golfers began the day at minus-four on the back nine. Huarte and Sheridan each played a bogey-free back nine and contributed two birdies apiece.

Cal, which won last year's NCAA Central Regional, tees off tomorrow at 7:40 a.m. The top-eight teams will advance to the NCAA Championships May 18-21 in Opelika, Ala.
