Three Cal Players Earn All-Region Honors
May 30, 2012
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Three Cal players - Brandon Hagy, Max Homa and Michael Kim - were named to the Division I PING All-West Region team on Wednesday as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Golden Bears' threesome was among 28 players selected from the West Region and 155 players from across six regions nationally.
The 2011-12 season has been amazingly similar for the trio that is separated by a total of only three shots over 36 rounds of stroke play each heading into their final round of the season Thursday at the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship. Homa and Hagy each check in with a 71.3 stroke average, with Homa's 2,566 shots on the season one fewer than Hagy's 2,567. Kim has a 71.4 stroke average with a total of 2,569 shots.
Each of the three had previously been named second-team All-Pac-12 and also shared team MVP honors.
The trio has played a huge role in Cal's season of firsts in 2011-12 in which the Bears have captured the first NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles in school history, as well as doubled the school record with six tournament wins and finished in the top five in each of their first 13 events.
Cal (295-289 - 584, +16) is currently tied for eighth and in the mix to obtain one of the eight match play spots at stake during the third and final round of stroke play action at the NCAA Championship on Thursday at The Riviera Country Club. The top eight teams in stroke play will advance to the match play portion of the event that will eventually determine the NCAA title and begins with four quarterfinals slated for Friday at Riviera.
