BERKELEY - One week into the seat-selection process for 2012 football tickets, Golden Bear fans have already secured more than 6,000 season tickets inside a renovated California Memorial Stadium, a figure that doesn't even include the more than 1,700 participants in the Endowment Seating Program.
Choosing seats for the upcoming campaign got underway last Monday and will continue through the end of the month for 2010 and '11 season-ticket holders, donors at the $100 level and above, and those who previously placed a per-seat deposit.
One of the early trends shows that number of tickets per account has significantly increased over recent seasons, showing the enthusiasm fans have for returning to Cal's on-campus facility, noted Ashwin Puri, associate athletic director for sales, marketing and service. He added that the sections between the goal and 30-yard lines, which feature benches with backs and increased legroom, have proven to be particularly popular with all but the lowest 10 rows having been purchased. In the new configuration, the field will be lowered by four feet, which will allow fans to see over the players and make those rows better than ever for watching the action close to the field.
"The first week of the reseat process has been extremely positive," Puri said. "Our fans are taking advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to secure great seat locations in our new stadium. As expected, we are almost sold out of our premium bench-back seats on the renovated west side, but there are still great seats available in every price point. Our fans are responding very positively to our new sales and service team, charged with ensuring our season-ticket holders are satisfied with the purchase process."
Ticket buyers have two primary options to obtain their tickets, either using an on-line system that includes virtual views from every section or coming into the sales center in Haas Pavilion for personalized help from a member of Cal's customer service staff.
"I was very apprehensive about the seat-selection process and whether I would be able to sit with my friend," said Garry Kataoka, a member of the Class of '61. "A very delightful and helpful person came to my aid and was able to help my friend and I find seats together."
Added Scott Paine, who will be sitting in Section H in the fall: "The sales staff was a great pleasure to work with and they did a great job. I am very thankful for their follow up calls. They helped me get into some great seats for this season."
Seats in Memorial Stadium will be available for all patrons who have a selection time, but because of the rate of purchase, fans are encouraged to pick their seats as close to their designated selection period as possible to ensure the best possible locations.
Anyone who is not part of the process already and would like to become season-ticket holder can place a $100 per-seat deposit by Seating & Pricing Map).
The Golden Bears open the 2012 season at home against Nevada on Sept. 1 with Southern Utah, Arizona State, UCLA, Stanford, Washington and Oregon also coming to Berkeley.
