No. 7 California Captures Cardinal Open

Palo Alto, CA - Tonight, the Bears took advantage of Stanford's miscues on high bar and captured the Cardinal Open crown. Seventh-ranked California topped the collegiate field tonight with a score of 215.625, while fifth-ranked Stanford finished second with a total of 213.525. The Cardinal Open All-Star team finished in third place with a 204.025, besting No. 15 Air Force (185.6) and Washington (179.475).

Senior co-captain Graham Ackerman, the 2004 National Champion in floor exercise, finished first in the event at the Open as well, scoring a 9.6. Senior Jay Yee, an NCAA finalist on the rings last season, took the title tonight as well with a career-best 9.75

Cal's freshman class continued to impress, with standout Tim McNeill capturing both the pommel horse title (9.45) and high bar crown (9.15). The Bears secured the win on the high bar, where they swept the top three positions. Behind McNeill was Ackerman (9.1) and sophomore Jason Pierce (9.1).

With the victory, the Bears improve to 2-1 on the season. Cal will next compete at the Winter Cup, Feb. 4-5 in Las Vegas, NV.
