SAN DIEGO - In one of the more anticipated races of the regatta, the Golden Bears put together a very fast race, fighting the strong winds and tide, to win their sixth straight Copley Cup on Sunday. The varsity eight boat got out to a fast start, building a small lead after the first 500 meters. Over the next 1000 meters the Bears found their rhythm and began to build on their lead. But in the last 500 meters Northeastern made a strong push towards the finish, posting the fastest split in the field. But Northeastern was not able to catch the Bears in the end, finishing second by two seconds.
"We had a great race," said senior co-captain and coxswain Shawn Ghatan. "We got out of the hole quick, and established a good rhythm. We are quite excited about our win. For all the hard work we do, this is our reward. We are excited to get back to practice and develop more speed."
In the JV grand final, the Bears were not able to repeat as champions, finishing second to Washington. Cal and Washington were locked in, racing stroke for stroke, but over the last 500 meters the Huskies pulled away, finishing six seconds ahead of the Bears.
Cal's freshmen eight dominated its race, beating the second place Stanford by eight seconds. The Bears had a very fast first 500 meters, building a quick three second lead on Stanford. Over the next 1500 meters Cal continued to build on its lead, finally crossing the finish in a time of 6:13.93.
