SAMMAMISH, Wash.- The 2008 University of California women's golf team finished tied for fourth in the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational Wednesday, Oct. 8 at the Sahalee Golf Club in Sammamish, Wash., with a 54-hole score of 927 (310, 308, 309 +63). The Bears finished behind tournament winner Stanford's +41 (303, 303, 299 - 905), second place Oregon's +57 (299, 309, 314 - 921) and third place Washington's +58 (310, 310, 302 - 922). Cal tied with Bay Area foe San Francisco (321, 298, 308 - 927, +63).

Individually, the Bears' top competitors were senior Allison Goodman (74, 80, 75) and freshman Diane Kwon (78, 76, 75) who finished the 6,130-yard, par-72 Sahalee Golf Club tied for 13th place with a +13, 229. Senior Shannon Yocum posted a 231 (76, 76, 79, +15) to capture a tie for 16th place. Freshman Angela Villela (82, 76, 80 - 238) tied for 33rd by posting a +22 . Sophomore Andrea Waters finished at +38 (85, 84, 85 - 254).

"We never really got warmed up here in Washington," said Coach Nancy McDaniel,"We shot about 309 all three days. It was a disappointing finish for our team. A top three finish would have been OK with a couple better scores. We never got off to a good start, and today we finished poorly as well. We are going to work on those things and head over to Stanford in about a week. We are hopefully going to take care of some business with our whole team back when Roseanne Niven and Pia Halbig come back from the world championships. The one highlight was Diane Kwon finishing 13th, which is a really high finish for a freshman, especially on this course and in these poor weather conditions. She turned in three solid rounds in the 70s and it was very encouraging for us."

The Bears had won their first two fall tournaments, the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in Fort Collins, Colo., back on Sept. 8-9, when the team shot an 18-under 846 (284-273-289) and the Badger Invitational in Verona, Wisc., on Sept. 27-28, when the team shot an 889 (296, 297, 296 +25). Those two tournament victories are the first time the Cal women's golf team has won two straight tournaments since the 2003 season when the Bears had three straight fall tournament victories and seven tournament wins total. Cal will next compete at the Stanford Intercollegiate on Oct. 17-18 in Stanford, Calif.
