IRVINE, Calif. - California freshman Sam Helvie won both springboard events at a previously unscheduled diving meet on Feb. 4 at UC Irvine.
Helvie scored a 337.72 to take the one-meter board and scored a 332.10 to take the three-meter board. The field included just four divers, including sophomore teammates Javier Rivas and Mark Wes. The latter took second place (315.60) at one meter and third (275.47) at three meters. Rivas was second (307.50) at three meters and third (314.54) at one meter.
A product of Bakersfield, Helvie set the Golden Bears' one-meter springboard record of 375.92 in a 159-78 dual-meet win over Arizona State on Jan. 20 in Berkeley. The Pac-10 conference also named Helvie its Diver of the Month for the month of December, after he became the first Bear to win a diving event at the Texas Invitational. Helvie won the platform event with a score of 282.85 at the annual competition in Austin, Texas.
The Cal men's swimmers and divers next compete on Saturday in a 1 p.m. dual meet at Stanford. Next week, both the Cal men and women's divers compete at the Pac-10 Diving Championships, Feb. 23-25, at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatics Center, in Federal Way, Wash.
