STANFORD, Calif. - The California women's tennis team fell to Stanford, 7-0, moving its record to 13-5 on the season and 4-3 in Pac-10 play. Cal hosts UCLA and USC this weekend at the Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley.
The Golden Bears limped into their match against No. 1 ranked Stanford with their best player, Raquel Kops-Jones, hobbled with a lower back injury, their 2003 MVP, Jody Scheldt, just one week removed from a month layoff due to a bum shoulder, and their top freshman, Sasha Podkolzina, still fighting to get back in shape after suffering through mononucleosis. The Bears left the Farm losers, but not down, knowing there is much more tennis to be played in 2004.
Despite being not close to 100 percent, Kops-Jones competed hard, falling to Amber Lui, 6-1, 6-1. In the teams' first meeting this season, Kops-Jones defeated Lui by the same score. Kops-Jones had missed the previous four straight matches with her back injury.
Podkolzina also showed that she could be rounding back into shape, after toughing out three long sets with ITA All-American finalist Erin Burdette.
