BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 6 California women's tennis team (16-4, 6-1 Pac-10) defeated Sacramento State (19-6, 8-0 Big Sky) by a 6-1 score Friday afternoon on Senior Day at the Hellman Tennis Center. Today's match marked the final home appearance for seniors Susie Babos, Stephanie Kusano, Cristina Visico and Daron Moore. Cal has now won 10 of its last 11 dual matches, and ends its home schedule with only one defeat at home.

The Golden Bears started strong, winning all three doubles matches by significant margins. Marina Cossou and Claire Ilcinkas took the first victory with an 8-2 victory on court two. Junior Bojana Bobusic and Visico clinched the doubles point by defeating their opponents 8-4 on court three, and the No. 45-ranked senior duo of Babos and Kusano started slow but finished strong to take an 8-4 win from Sacramento State on court one.

In singles play, Ilcinkas claimed the first victory over her opponent, Luba Schifris, when Schifris was forced to retire in the middle of the second set due to injury. The final score was 6-0, 4-1. Cossou, currently ranked No. 6 in the nation, next on court two, defeating Anastassia Lyssenko 6-3, 6-2. On court five, Bobusic won on court five, 6-4, 6-2, giving Cal a 4-0 lead and clinching the victory.

Babos, in her last home match of her Cal career, was upset by No. 48 Katrina Zheltova on court one. Babos constantly battled but ended up losing 6-4, 6-4. The last two matches finished almost simultaneously with Visico winning 6-1, 6-4 on court three and Kusano defeating Joyce Martinez on court six by a score of 6-3, 6-4.

Cal wraps up the regular season tomorrow at Stanford at noon. The Bears, who defeated the Cardinal earlier this season in a non-conference match on Feb. 20 in Berkeley, have a chance to claim at least a share of the Pac-10 Conference title if they can knock off Stanford once again. UCLA also began the week at 6-1 in the conference and is taking on USC today.
