No. 2 Cal Men's Water Polo Defeats Cal Baptist and UC San Diego at SoCal Open

IRVINE, CALIF. - The No. 2-ranked California men's water polo team (6-0) won its first two matches of the 2005 SoCal Open, defeating Cal Baptist, 17-4; and No. 7-ranked UC San Diego, 8-6, Saturday at Corona del Mar High School. Cal now advances - along with the nation's other top four ranked teams - to the tournament semifinals. Top-ranked UCLA will face No. 4 Stanford at 10:30 a.m., while the second-ranked Golden Bears meet No. 3 USC at 11:45 a.m. The championship match is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. at UC Irvine.

Against Cal Baptist, sophomore Michael Sharf, junior captain Brian Bacharach and junior John Mann scored three goals each for Cal, which built a 10-2 halftime lead and cruised to the 17-4 win. Besides Sharf, Bacharach and Mann's goals, the Bears also were paced by junior Brian Kinsel's two goals, and single goals from sophomore Adam Haley, sophomore Kevin Platshon, freshman Trent Calder, senior captain Tom Kurth, junior Andrija Vasiljevic and sophomore Zac Monsees.

In the afternoon match, Cal outscored UC San Diego 5-1 in the second quarter and went on to defeat the Tritons 8-6. Bacharach led the Bears with three goals and Vasiljevic added two as Cal advanced to a championship semifinal. Vasiljevic's second goal of the game at 6:04 of the second quarter gave the Bears the lead for good at 3-2. Senior goalie Nate Bennett finished the contest with an impressive 11 saves, while Kinsel, Sharf and junior Marty Matthies also tallied goals.
