BERKELEY, Calif. - The California men's swimming and diving team opened its season with a dominating 171-127 win over Florida State on Friday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears won 11 out of 14 individual events and the 200-yard medley relay against the Seminoles, who had won their previous two meets.

Cal senior diver Louie Gagnet, a former Seminole, had a strong dual meet against his former school, qualifying for the NCAA Zone E Regional Championships in winning both the one-meter (346.20) and three-meter boards (337.425).

Ten different Bears won events, with Gagnet the only double winner. Cal's only sweep came in the 200 butterfly, won by sophomore Patrick O'Neil (1:49.06). Senior John Dorr (1:51.55) took second place and freshman Justin Pollard (1:52.49) was third. Cal's Chris Gibson, Caleb Rowe, Rolandas Gimbutis and Matt Lyon opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:32.22. Next, Bears sophomore Daniel Lysaught won the day's first individual event, the 1000 freestyle, in 9:11.91, with freshman teammate John Foster (9:19.59) taking second.

The Bears won the first eight events before FSU swept the 100 freestyle, with Joel Roycik (46.68) winning the event, Edward Denton (46.75) taking second and Alex Kennon (47.21) placing third.

Cal next competes at the Pacific Invitational next Friday and Saturday in Stockton, Calif.
