BERKELEY - California senior swimmer Justin Pollard has been selected as the new Pac-10 representative to the NCAA's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the conference announced today.
"It's a great honor," said Pollard, a freestyle/butterfly competitor, economics major, two-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection and 2005-06 and 2006-07 winner of the Golden Bear Award for highest GPA on his team. "We've had some of the finest student-athletes in the country as our representatives. I'm just hoping I can fill their shoes."
Pollard's term representing the Pac-10 within the National SAACs - which acts as a student-athlete voice for feedback on structure, legislature and governance by the NCAA - begins immediately and ends September 1, 2009. He previously served as co-vice chair for the conference SAAC.
Pollard and his fellow SAAC members at the University continue to prepare for College Sports Day on April 6, when area youth are invited to Cal's Maxwell Field to interact with Golden Bear student-athletes.
The SAACs' stated mission is "to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image."
The next Pac-10 SAAC meeting takes place April 11-12, coupled with a Student-Athlete Forum April 12-13 in San Francisco.
