BERKELEY - Sophomore Aleksa Saponjic scored his fifth goal of the match with 36 seconds left in the contest to get Cal within 11-10, but that was as close as the Golden Bears would get, falling to Long Beach State Saturday (Oct. 27) in an MPSF men's water polo tilt at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

Cal did have a final possession with six seconds left on the clock, but sophomore goalie Jon Sibley's pass into two meters was knocked away by the 49ers' White. With the loss, the Bears fall to 10-7 overall and 1-3 in the MPSF. Long Beach State, coached by former Cal All-American and Olympian Gavin Arroyo, improved to 19-4 and 1-1 in league play.

It was the Bears sixth one-goal loss of the season and 10th one-goal loss in the past two years. Cal has also fallen three times in overtime this year.

Long Beach State owned a 2-0 lead after the first quarter on goals by Nick Rascon and Zacchary Kappos. The Bears rebounded in the second period by outscoring the 49ers, 5-2, on goals by Saponjic, redshirt freshman Colin Mulcahy, senior captain Marin Balarin, sophomore Matt Russell and redshirt freshman Thomas Agramonte.

The 49ers' White tied the match, 5-5, with a goal early in the third period, and then the two teams shared goals. Mulcahy had his second score of the contest with 5:42 in the third quarter and Saponjic tied the match, 7-7, with a score at 3:12 in the third period.

Unfortunately for Cal, Long Beach State wrapped up the third period with two straight goals - from Dan Matulis and Rascon, to take a 9-7 advantage.

In the fourth period, Saponjic provided the Bears with their scoring punch, knocking down goals at 4:09, 3:10 and 36 seconds left in the match, but Carter Taylor's goal with 1:42 in the final period gave LBS an 11-9 lead and ended up being the difference in the contest.

The Bears next travel to UC Irvine, Thursday, Nov. 1 (7 p.m.); and Pepperdine, Friday, Nov. 2 (3 p.m.), for a pair of MPSF road matches. Cal is 1-1 versus the Anteaters and 1-0 versus the Waves so far this season.
