Junior Laura Spellman is a defender from Gilroy, Calif. in her third season with the California Golden Bear field hockey team. She has two career goals, one of them the game-winner in overtime against Fairfield last season. Prior to coming to Cal, she was a 2009 Futures Elite selection and a 2008 All-Mercury News first team member.
She is a Conservation and Resource Studies major.
Here are some things you may not know about Laura:
Place in the world you would like to travel: I would love to travel to Ireland because it is so pretty and green there
Places in the world you have traveled: Unfortunately, I don't even own a passport
As an athlete, the item that best represents you is... my feet. They are abnormally large and make me look weird when I run. I guess they are the entertaining factor for my teammates
Favorite part of practice and game days: Our time spent in the locker room blasting music and getting pumped up
Secret food cravings: Pomegranates. I wait for season to come around every year because my dad brings me a bunch every home game
Favorite type of cookie: Oatmeal, but only my great grandma's recipe. None of that store bought stuff, unless it is girl scout cookies
All-time favorite movies: Miracle and Remember the Titans
Where you see yourself in 10 years: Hopefully employed and not living with my parents
Pet peeves: I hate when people chew their food with their mouths open

Best moment from a road trip last season: Our team made a music video for one of our teammates media studies class. It was awesome.
Favorite sport other than field hockey: I love watching baseball. The Giants have been my favorite team ever since I was little
Dangerous thing you would do if there were no risks: I would love to go rock climbing and sleep on the mountain like those really intense people do in Yosemite
Reason you picked your jersey number: My favorite number was taken when I came to school so my high school coach told me to choose No. 9 because it was one of his favorite ice hockey players
Number of miles you are from home: 78.1 miles, but it seems so far away
Age when you first played field hockey: 8th grade
How would you describe your game when you first started playing? A combination of all the sports I played put into one. It was a dream-come-true!
Your teammates say you are... always prepared. I guess that makes me the mom on the team.
What you love most about Cal: I love that Berkeley allows me to be who I won't be everyone is different here and you come into contact with the most incredible people
What you love most about living in the Bay Area: I love the fact that there is so much around us we can escape to. We can go to the beach, mountains, anything.
